Imports of food supplements - NOVEL FOOD and FOOD INGREDIENTS

When the food supplement contains ingredients other than "traditional" food ingredients and “vitamins and minerals and “aditives, the operator must ensure that they are not considered as novel Food (“novel food” in its English terminology). This means that the operator ensures that the ingredients constituting the food supplement have a history of consumption in the EU before 1997, thus meeting the requirements of Regulation (EU) no. 2015/2283. For this purpose, you can consult the references indicated in the form used in the import application. Food supplements not complying with the above Regulation may not enter the Community.

Cannot be ingredients in food supplements
:

  1. Additives, colours and flavourings authorised solely for those purposes when incorporated into food supplements with another function (as active substances to which the beneficial effect is attributed);

  2. Substances for which there is no history of consumption in the EU, even though the species which they are extracted from is not a Novel Food (an example is the case of 'apigenin' or 'apigenol', a compound for which there is no history of consumption, even though it is abundant in parsley).
